Asus ROG Ally Users Report Issues with Armory Crate Special Edition 1.5 Update

Recent reports from multiple Asus ROG Ally users indicate that the latest Armory Crate Special Edition (ACSE) 1.5 software update has caused significant issues for the original ROG Ally handheld gaming PC. This new version of Asus' Armory Crate software was launched alongside the refreshed ROG Ally X, but it seems to have created problems for many owners of the original model.

The Asus ROG Ally was released last year to compete with Valve's popular Steam Deck handheld gaming PC. Unlike the Steam Deck, which runs a specialized version of Linux, the ROG Ally operates on full desktop Windows 11. To enhance usability without a keyboard and mouse, Asus developed the custom Armory Crate hub software, allowing for easier navigation on the handheld device.

With the introduction of the ROG Ally X, Asus also released the overhauled Armory Crate SE 1.5 update. While the software has received positive reviews on the newer device, ROG Ally users have reported a variety of issues. Many have taken to the r/ROGAlly community on Reddit, sharing experiences of endless install loops and missing inputs after updating to ACSE 1.5. These problems seem to be most prevalent among users with the AMD Z1 Extreme version of the ROG Ally.

How to Fix Armory Crate 1.5 Issues

For those experiencing issues with the Armory Crate 1.5 update, a straightforward fix has been suggested:

1. Locate the Armory Crate SE shortcut on the ROG Ally's Windows 11 desktop.

2.Right-click on the logo.

3.Select "Settings" from the menu.

4.Find the "Reset" prompt at the bottom of the menu and click it.

5.Restart the device.

While users with the cheaper Z1 variant have reported fewer problems, some have still experienced ancillary issues, including malfunctioning AMD Radeon Super Resolution, missing TDP settings, frequent crashes, and sluggish mode switching in the operating system. Users believe these issues stem from installation conflicts between the new ACSE 1.5 files and the existing Armory Core directory.

Despite the challenges, the ROG Ally's AMD Z1 Extreme chipset generally offers better performance than the Steam Deck in many scenarios. However, its reliance on Windows 11 does mean that users may encounter troubleshooting issues from time to time. Fortunately, the strong community surrounding the Asus ROG Ally has quickly come together to identify and share solutions for those affected by the ACSE 1.5 update problems. As Asus works to address these issues, users can find comfort in the support of their fellow gamers and the promising capabilities of their handheld devices.
