Houston Outlaws officially closes down

Outlaws Entertainment, the parent company behind the esports brands Houston Outlaws and Team AXLE, has officially ceased operations. The announcement came on July 26th, marking the end of an era for one of the pioneering teams in the Overwatch League (OWL).

Outlaws Entertainment released a statement expressing gratitude to fans for their support while citing an inability to maintain a sustainable business model as the reason for the closure. Founded in 2017, Houston Outlaws was one of the inaugural franchises in OWL. Despite a notable achievement of securing second place in the OWL 2023 Playoffs, the organization has faced challenges following the league's decline.

The Houston Outlaws experienced several ownership changes throughout their history. Initially owned by Infinite Esports & Entertainment, the franchise was acquired by Immortals Gaming Club in 2019. Following this, Immortals Gaming Club sold Houston Outlaws to Beasley Media Group, a prominent American radio broadcasting company, in November 2019. The team's ownership transitions reflect the broader shifts in the esports industry over recent years.

In addition to the Houston Outlaws, Outlaws Entertainment also managed Team AXLE, which competed in Rocket League from 2021 to 2023. Although Team AXLE participated in the North American RLCS scene, it did not secure a major qualification during its tenure. The recent closure also impacts the team’s involvement in other esports ventures, such as the 'e2Real' racing series Prodigy Racing League, which was recently announced.

The closure of Outlaws Entertainment has led to the deactivation of the Houston Outlaws' X (formerly Twitter) account. The statement from the company included heartfelt thanks to players, coaches, sponsors, and fans, reflecting on memorable moments from their time at Blizzard Arena and their singular Homestand event in Houston.

The shutdown of Outlaws Entertainment marks the end of an influential chapter in the esports world. While the Houston Outlaws and Team AXLE have concluded their competitive journeys, the impact of their participation in the Overwatch League and other esports arenas will be remembered by fans and the industry alike.
