Striking Distance Studios is expanding the universe of The Callisto Protocol with a new roguelike game titled The Callisto Protocol: Escape. Set within the eerie confines of Black Iron Prison, the game places players in the role of a beleaguered prison guard trying to escape a devastating outbreak.

The Callisto Protocol, released in late 2022, faced criticism for its brief runtime, limited replayability, and issues that stemmed from an early release. However, Striking Distance Studios has since improved the game with new modes and DLCs, enhancing its reputation.

Escape, formerly known as Project Birdseye, was recently unveiled with an official announcement trailer. This top-down roguelike shooter promises a fresh experience with a focus on action and combat rather than the survival horror of its predecessor. Players will navigate the chaos of Black Iron Prison as a security guard, striving to escape with only one escape pod remaining. Success depends on fighting both the living and infected inmates. If a player dies, they can attempt to reclaim lost resources by battling their deceased character’s infected form, which retains the same weapons and upgrades.

The game’s art style deviates from the grim tone of The Callisto Protocol, adopting a more cartoonish approach. This shift is evident in the gameplay comparisons to Hades, earning Escape the informal nickname "Hades in space."

Striking Distance Studios has hinted at more information to come, especially since they are also working on a new title using Unreal Engine 5. Fans are hopeful for another mainline entry in The Callisto Protocol universe, but for now, Escape stands out as an intriguing departure from the survival horror genre.

With a release date set for October 31, excitement is building for The Callisto Protocol: Escape, and gamers can look forward to diving into this action-packed roguelike adventure soon.
